We have 4 acres of vinifera in Grainger County (Spout Spring Estates). We have to net to protect from birds, deer etc. Placing and removing netting is one of the least favorite vineyard activities. We cut nets to row length and roll them on a spool using a net jetter. To place on the rows, Chuck unspools them as good as possible on the top of the row. Two people then have to pull apart to cover vines and clip. When removing two people again pull netting up on one side and pull out into the row for respooling for storage (again with the net jetter). We spooled by hand for one year - extremely labor intensive and hard on the back!! Nets need to be applided when vine growth is minimal so shoots do not grow through the nets.
