Selecting a variety of grapes to plant (reply) I selected Chardonel grapes.
I planted 10 of them in April.
Throughout the summer they grew to be 12-18 inches tall.
Two of the vines tried to produce grapes.
I am planning on buying 10 more vines this spring.

Selecting a variety of grapes to plant (reply) I'm also going to be planting some grapes in the spring of 2016 in Maryville. I would be interested in what advice you received on grape varieties.

New grower support Hi everyone! I recently joined your group and I am looking forward to sharing experiences. This is my first year growing my small vineyard of 70 plants. Could anyone recommend a member that lives close to the Halls/Knoxville area that may be willing to offer suggestions and maybe visit my operation? I have been making wine about 3 years but new in growing my own grapes. Thank you for any suggestions.

Selecting a variety of grapes to plant (reply) Dear PW, I'm in Kingsport at an elevation below 1000 ft with a south facing slope. You'll need these statistics to be accurately guided. We've had good luck with Fredonia and Niagra on our acre plot. Your area may be different though. Try your county's extension office if growing just a few plants. If you're going for acreage, contact a local winery that would be interested in buying your grapes to see what they need most. We've sold to Blue Slip, Tennessee Valley and Hillside Wineries in the Knoxville area. They can likely put you in contact with other growers too. TFWA is another organization that focuses on commercial wineries. Chardonnay has a short life in TN due to our wide temperature swings.

Selecting a variety of grapes to plant I am trying to determine which variety of grapes would grow best in east Tennessee.
We are located about 10 miles north of Knoxville.
The vines would be growing on the hillside behind our house.
I want to be able to make a dry white wine for our personal consumption.
We are considering Chardonnay. Is there another grape variety that would be better suited to our local climate?
